From History to New Horizons
Star Mill History
Built around 1858 by Mr. Wilson Chenoweth, a skilled craftsman and visionary of his time, Mr. Chenoweth strived to better his community and was always looking for ways to improve his business. Around the same time a young and innovative millwright, John T. Wilder was making a name for himself in the milling industry. Wilder converted the mill’s water wheel to steam power; this remarkable structure stands as a testament to ingenuity and resilience. Wilder’s pioneering use of steam-powered water wheels transformed the milling industry, and the Star Mill remains a symbol of that bold ingenuity.
Wilder, who later served as the Indiana 17th Infantry Union Army General during the Civil War, exemplified the spirit of progress that defined his time. General Wilder also had a connection with a fellow Hoosier, by the name of Eli Lilly, a young pharmacist destined for greatness. Lilly’s 18th Indiana Artillery joined Wilder’s “Lightning Brigade,” in pivotal battles like the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battle of Hoover's Gap. Both men shared a common bond through their leadership and dedication to shaping Indiana’s legacy both during and after the Civil War.
